Dynamical Stability and Habitability of γ Cephei Binary-Planetary System

چکیده

It has been suggested that the long-lived residual radial velocity variations observed in the precision radial velocity measurements of the primary of γ Cephei (HR8974, HD222404, HIP116727) are likely due to a Jupiter-like planet around this star (Hatzes et al. 2003). In this paper, the orbital dynamics of this plant is studied and also the possibility of the existence of a hypothetical Earth-like planet in the habitable zone of its central star is discussed. Simulations, which have been carried out for different values of the eccentricity and semimajor axis of the binary, as well as the orbital inclination of its Jupiter-like planet, expand on previous studies of this system and indicate that, for the values of the binary eccentricity smaller than 0.5, and for all values of the orbital inclination of the Jupiter-like planet ranging from 0◦ to 40◦, the orbit of this planet is stable. For larger values of the binary eccentricity, the system becomes gradually unstable. Integrations also indicate that, within this range of orbital parameters, a hypothetical Earth-like planet can have a long-term stable orbit only at distances of 0.3 to 0.8 AU from the primary star. The habitable zone of the primary, at a range of approximately 3.1 to 3.8 AU, is, however, unstable. On the Dynamical Stability of γ Cephei, an S-Type Binary Planetary System

Precision radial velocity measurements of the γ Cephei (HR8974) binary system suggest the existence of a planetary companion with a minimum mass of 1.7 Jupiter-mass on an elliptical orbit with a ∼2.14 AU semimajor axis and 0.12 eccentricity [1]. I present in this paper a summary of the results of an extensive numerical study of the orbital stability of this three-body system for different value...

On the Possibility of Additional Planets in the Γ Cephei Binary-planetary System

Results of the simulations of the dynamical stability of additional hypothetical planets in the γ Cephei binary-planetary system are presented. Using the reported orbital parameters of the existing bodies (Hatzes et al. 2003), simulations were carried out for different values of the mass, eccentricity, and inclination of an additional Jupiter-like plantet to test the stability of this object at...

Planets and Asteroids in the γ Cephei system

The binary star system γ Cephei is unusual in that it harbours a stable giant planet around the larger star at a distance only about a tenth of that of the stellar separation. Numerical simulations are carried out into the stability of test particles in the system. This provides possible locations for additional planets and asteroids. To this end, the region interior to the planet is investigat...

Dynamical habitability of planetary systems.

The problem of the stability of planetary systems, a question that concerns only multiplanetary systems that host at least two planets, is discussed. The problem of mean motion resonances is addressed prior to discussion of the dynamical structure of the more than 350 known planets. The difference with regard to our own Solar System with eight planets on low eccentricity is evident in that 60% ...

Habitability of Planets in Binary Star Systems

A survey of currently known planet-hosting stars indicates that approximately 25% of extrasolar planetary systems are within dual-star environments. Several of these systems contain stellar companions on moderately close orbits, implying that studies of the formation and dynamical evolution of giant and terrestrial planets, in and around binary star systems have now found realistic grounds. Wit...
